About the twenty and four

The Twenty and Four was organized to recognize in a special way the achievements of female members of The American Legion.

The men’s honor group, The Forty and Eight, remained firmly closed to women. The Eight and Forty was for members of The American Legion Auxiliary, therefore, women legionnaires organized The Twenty and Four as their “honor” society. Women members of The American Legion, in increasing numbers through their contributions of work, time and effort, have won election and earned appointment to various offices in County, District, Division, Department, Area levels. Women Legionnaires have held national offices, and many more women Legionnaires have actively participated in all American Legion programs above and beyond the Post level.
